Contact for Event Len Crellin, KC2PCD (585) 671-2424 kc2pcd@rochester.rr.com HAM RADIO BACKGROUND Amateur ("Ham") radio operators enjoy worldwide wireless communication with other enthusiasts and in doing so spread international goodwill. Hams are always prepared for portable-powered operations for emergency relief efforts during disasters. These have included, for example, Florida and Gulf Coast hurricanes, the Indian Ocean tsunami, devastating tornados, as well as our local blizzards and ice storms. Local hams have an ongoing relationship with the National Weather Service in Buffalo via the SKYWARN program and are prepared to assist the Rochester chapter of the Red Cross should normal modes of communication become overloaded or fail. Additionally, they participate in Ginna nuclear power plant drills. For many years members of the Rochester Amateur Radio Association [RARA] have provided portable communications for public events such as walk-a-thons, the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure, the MS 150 Bike Tour, the Rochester Marathon, parades, the Spirit of America Festival, triathlons, and the NY State Police-sponsored Pumpkin Patrol, just to name a few. Hams provide their communication expertise on a volunteer basis for the good of the community. Locally RARA members spend over 2900 volunteer-hours per year serving the Greater Monroe County region.
