German Shepherd Dog - Large - Young - Male - Dog - Wiley
Description
UPDATE! Wiley had his bilateral elbow surgery on 9/30 and is now home with his foster family resting comfortably. He has a long recovery ahead of him for at least 6 weeks and will most likely need physical therapy during that time. A very large displaced bone fragment was found and removed from Wiley's right elbow and a smaller non-displaced bone fragment was found and removed from his left. Surgery was very successful and Wiley stole the hearts of all his caretakers- they didn't even want him to come home- they wanted him to live there with them all!! Wiley is one special boy and leaves footprints in the hearts of all he meets! Your donations are so appreciated. Please keep Wiley in your thoughts, wishing him a speedy and uneventful recovery! Many thanks to everyone who has been checking in on Wiley. We will update as moves along in his recovery process Meet Wiley! He is a 1 year old neutered male. We believe he is a GSD/Malmute mix and possibly some Northern Inuit Dog. (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/northerninuitdog.htm) Wiley is such a handsome young guy and full of love. He just adores people and likes to be a velcro dog. Wiley came from Tenn. where he was picked up as a stray. Wiley is doing great in his foster home, living with 3 other dogs, cats and farm animals. Wiley does great with all his canine companions and though he is respectful of the cats we will not be adopting him to a home with small animals as he does have a very high prey drive. Wiley has amazing house manners, is crate trained and housebroken. He is such a lovebug and will do anything to make you happy. He would be an amazing addition to any family During Wiley's transport to NY, his overnighting family noted a slight lameness. Once with his foster family, it was very evident that something wasn't right with his right front leg. Over the next 6 weeks, Wiley visited various veterinarians to determine what was wrong. We first supsected Panosteitis, known as growing pains which is very common in large breed dogs and he was right at the age for it. However Pano tends to come and go and "shift", affecting more than just one leg. This was not the case in Wiley. Our next step was to take Wiley to a specialist as Elbow Dysplasia was supsected. The surgical specialist confirmed Wiley does indeed have Elbow Dysplasia and supects he has a fracture to his cornoid process, small bone that is part of the elbow. The fracture tends to cause the dogs more pain and discomfort. This disease tends to affect both elbows in 80 percent of dogs, but Wiley is only showing clinical signs with his right elbow. Treatment for this is surgery to removed the fragmented bone. This will make him much more comfortable and improve his quality of life. He will need good management over his life to minimize the onset of arthritis- such as a good joint supplement. Some of his activity may be limited- he won't be able to go out and run miles with his family but there is no reason why he won't be able to go out and enjoy a nice hike or occasional light run with his new family. And believe me, Wiley's favorite thing to do is RUN and I know he'd be ecastic to be able to run pain free! This is where you come in, Wiley needs YOUR help! His surgery is most likely to cost close to $3000.00 dollars. Donations are always needed and greatly appreciated. Words cannot express how good it is to see a dog who needed some "angels" finally be happy, pain free and able to do things he couldn't do before. Wiley is still so young and has his whole life ahead of him. He deserves that and we at Big Dogs, Big Hearts will make sure he gets it. Can you help? Wiley will be forever grateful as will all of us at Big dogs, Big Hearts Rescue. And if your looking for an amazing canine companion, who knows? Wiley may just steal your heart! I know he's stolen many already!
